The Avon River is a river in Gippsland in the Australian state of Victoria .

The Avon River rises on the slopes of Mount Wellington (altitude: 1634 m) in the eastern highlands and flows south to Lake Wellington. Its main tributaries are the Valencia Creek , the Freestone Creek and the Perry River , which flows into Lake Wellington just before Lake Wellington.
The upper reaches of the river lie in the rugged, heavily forested and largely inaccessible Avon Wilderness Park . The river first flows through wooded hill country and then through open, agricultural terrain. Near Stratford , the river has widened its bed up to 500 m wide. At this point it consists mainly of sand and gravel banks. Further downstream is the Macallister Irrigation District . The Nuntin Creek , which brings a lot of runoff from agricultural land, flows ten kilometers below Stratford.
Together with the Latrobe River and the Thomson River, it flows into Lake Wellington , the westernmost of the Gippsland Lakes .

The Latrobe Rivers and Thomson Rivers are used extensively for the water supply of Melbourne , Australia's largest paper mill and the power plant industry of the Latrobe Valley , as well as for the irrigation of the country. The Avon River has so far been spared from such use and water drainage.
Culture
The Avon River was very important to the Kurnai Aboriginal tribe , as can be seen in the Knob Reservation , two miles south of Stratford, which is part of the Bataluk Cultural Trail . This hiking trail shows culturally important places of these first inhabitants of the eastern Gippsland.
