The old, meter-gauge railway line Djibouti – Addis Ababa ran through Awash . This was probably the worst railway accident in the history of Africa .

In 2016, the new, now standard-gauge railway line Addis Ababa – Djibouti was opened, on which Awash again received a train station. Another line is being built that branches off from Awash in a north-easterly direction, the Awash – Hara Gebeya railway line . It is scheduled to open in 2018.
economy
Awash lives economically from trade, but also has a dromedary breeding with export to the Arab region.
