Axel C. Heitmann

Axel Claus Heitmann (born October 2, 1959 in Hamburg ) is a German chemist and manager.

Studies and career

Axel Heitmann studied chemistry at the University of Hamburg and at the University of Southampton , UK. Heitmann received his doctorate in 1988 from the University of Hamburg. rer. nat. on a topic on the synthesis of antigens. In 1989 he began his professional life at Bayer AG in Leverkusen. In 1991 he became head of Bayer's Bromsgrove site in the UK . In 1996 he switched to Polymer Latex, a joint venture between Bayer AG and Degussa AG .

From 1999 to the beginning of 2002 he was Chairman of the Board of Management of the Bayer subsidiary Wolff Walsrode AG and then took over the management of the rubber division of Bayer AG before being appointed to the Executive Committee of Bayer MaterialScience in July 2002 . With the transfer of management of the Asia / Pacific region, Heitmann moved his office to Shanghai. On September 16, 2004, he was appointed Chairman of the Board of Management of the newly founded LANXESS AG, which was created through the spin-off of the chemicals and parts of the polymer division of Bayer AG. In 2013 LANXESS had around 17,200 employees. When Lanxess went public in January 2005, holders of Bayer shares received one free specialty chemical company for every ten Bayer shares. Lanxess was initially ridiculed as a spare ramp, but it developed into a success story. After the spin-off, a share only cost around EUR 15, when it was listed on the DAX on September 24, 2012 at EUR 66.

On February 28, 2014, Heitmann resigned from his position as member and Chairman of the Management Board of Lanxess AG. The separation from Heitmann took place "because of strategic differences", explained supervisory board chairman Rolf Stomberg at the 2014 annual general meeting.

From 2016 to 2018 Heitmann was a member of the Board of Directors of Sulzer AG, Switzerland.

Private

Heitmann is married and has two children.

Heitmann has been an honorary citizen of the city of Wuxi since April 2006 . In January 2007, Heitmann was by the readers of magazines Euro and Euro am Sonntag for Entrepreneur of the Year 2006 selected. Furthermore, a survey of analysts, investors and fund managers by the US business publisher “Institutional Investor” in June of the same year showed that he was chosen among the five best CEOs in Europe in the “Basic Materials” category, “Chemicals” sector . In November 2009, Heitmann received the Econ Award for Personality of the Year . In 2012, Heitmann was appointed Economic Ambassador for the City of Cologne by Mayor Jürgen Roters. Heitmann was voted “Strategist of the Year” twice by the Financial Times Deutschland, the strategy consultancy Bain & Company and the WHU - Otto Beisheim School of Management as the far-sighted and successful leader of a listed German company. In 2011 in the category “Medium-Sized Enterprises” (2.5 to 7.5 billion euros in sales) and in 2012 in the “Large Enterprises” category.
