Act

Plaue joined the SPD in 1969. Willy Brandt's visions of a democratic society and his departure into a new peace policy in Europe prompted him to become a member of the SPD. In the first few years Axel Plaue was mainly active in the Jusos and in the SPD local association Misburg. From 1978 to 1992 he was chairman of the SPD local association in Hanover-Misburg and from 1987 to 1991 treasurer of the SPD Hanover- City. From 1991 to 1995 he was deputy chairman of the SPD Hannover-Stadt. Plaue was a member of the Lower Saxony state parliament from 1986 to 2008. During his first legislative period, he was a member of the committees for urban development and housing, as well as for ports and shipping, and in the mine safety subcommittee. From 1988 to 1998 he was urban development policy spokesman for the SPD parliamentary group.

After the state elections in 1998 he became deputy chairman of the SPD state parliamentary group and was responsible for the areas of domestic and legal policy, urban development and housing. After the resignation of Lower Saxony's Prime Minister Gerhard Glogowski (SPD) at the end of 1999, the previous SPD parliamentary group leader Sigmar Gabriel was elected as the new Prime Minister. Axel Plaue then became the new parliamentary group leader of the SPD in the state parliament and remained in office until the state elections in 2003.

After the 2003 election, he moved into the state parliament again through the SPD's state election proposal. Since the state elections in February 2003 he was a member of the committee for federal and European affairs and the media as well as the committee for the preparation of the election of the members of the state court in the state parliament of Lower Saxony.

From 1986 to 2003, Axel Plaue won his constituency Hanover North-East directly. In the state election in 2008 , however, he failed in the newly formed constituency of Hanover-Buchholz against Gisela Konrath from the CDU. In view of the failure of the Social Democrats, 54th place on the state list of the SPD was not enough for a return to the state parliament.

At the suggestion of the SPD, Axel Plaue was a member of the 13th Federal Assembly on May 23, 2009 and the 14th Federal Assembly on June 30, 2010.
