Wilhelm Baumgarten (politician, 1913)

Wilhelm Baumgarten (born November 6, 1913 in Groß Lafferde ; † December 25, 1996 in Göttingerode ) was a German politician ( SPD ).

Life and work

After graduating from the Reform High School in Peine in 1933 , Baumgarten studied education at the Technical University of Braunschweig until 1936 . Until 1939 he was a primary school teacher in Blankenburg , Wieda , Rübeland and Göttingerode . From 1939 to 1945 he served in the Air Force . Baumgarten was taken prisoner of war in Göttingerode. After the end of the Second World War , he was the main teacher and head of the elementary school in Göttingerode from 1945 to 1959. In 1962 he became a member of the supervisory board of the reconstruction cooperative, which he took over as chairman in 1978 and held it until 1989. Baumgarten wrote books about the history of his home village Groß Lafferde and about the communal merger to form the city of Bad Harzburg .

In May 1933 Baumgarten joined the SA and the Nazi teachers' association , and in the summer of that year the National Socialist German Student Association and the German Student Union . In addition, he held the office of cell administrator in the Nazi teachers' association. In May 1937 he was accepted as a member of the NSDAP . When he was denazified , Baumgarten stated that he had joined the SA and the Nazi teachers' association "in order to be able to continue the study of educational sciences that had already started, but above all to get a scholarship" (quoted in Glienke, p. 108).

After the war Baumgarten was a member of the SPD . He had been a council member in Harlingerode since 1952 and was mayor of the community from 1952 to 1967 , which consisted of the villages of Harlingerode and Göttingerode . Here he also worked with his party colleague and later President of the Lower Saxony City Council , Horst Voigt . From 1956 to 1974 he belonged to the district council of Wolfenbüttel and, after the regional reform in Lower Saxony, to the district council of Goslar . Baumgarten became a member of the Lower Saxony state parliament in the 4th to 8th electoral period from May 6, 1959 to June 20, 1978.

In 1966/67 he was chairman of the SPD parliamentary group, from 1967 to 1974 president of the Lower Saxony parliament and from 1974 to 1978 its vice-president. 1977 it was chosen by the council of the district Goslar for district , this office had Baumgarten held until November 1981st

Wilhelm Baumgarten died on December 25, 1996 in the Göttingerode district of Bad Harzburg .
