Ayşe Erzan

Ayşe Erzan (* 1949 in Ankara ) is a Turkish theoretical physicist and professor emeritus at the İstanbul Teknik University . She is a holder of the UNESCO L'Oréal Prize and the Rammal Prize .

Life

Ayşe Erzan passed her matriculation examination in Istanbul and then began studying physics at Bryn Mawr College , which she completed in 1970 with a bachelor's degree. In 1976 she received her PhD from Stony Brook University .

Erzan then returned to Ankara and became a research assistant at the Physics Department of the Middle East Technical University . In 1977 she moved to İstanbul Teknik Üniversitesi. During this time she began to work for peace and women's rights. She left the country after the military coup in Turkey in 1980 . From 1981 to 1990 Erzan researched and taught at various institutions and universities. In 1981/82 she worked at the Department of Theoretical Physics at the University of Geneva. From 1982 to 1985 she was a research assistant at the University of Porto and then until 1987 a scholarship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation at the Department of Theoretical Physics at the Philipps University of Marburg . From 1987 to 1990 she did research at the Dutch University of Groningen . Erzan was then briefly a research fellow at the International Center for Theoretical Physics in Trieste , before returning to the İstanbul Teknik Universitesi as a professor in 1990. She also conducted research at the Feza Gürsey Institute of the Boğaziçi Üniversitesi . In 2012 she retired.

Research priorities

Ayşe Erzan's research interests include phase transitions , disordered systems, network theories , self-organization in complex non-linear systems with applications in the fields of earthquakes, evolution and the physics of polymers and proteins.

Awards and honors

Erzan became an associate member of the Turkish Academy of Sciences in 1995 and a full member in 1997. In the same year she received the Science Award of the Turkish Institute for Scientific and Technological Research . In 2003, Erzan was awarded the UNESCO L'Oréal Prize and in 2009 the Rammal Prize. She has been a member of the Academia Europaea since 2011 . In 2020 she received the Andrei Sakharov Prize of the American Physical Society for her commitment to human rights . She is a member of the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World and the Bilim Akademisi . It belongs to the editorial board of the Journal of Statistical Physics and the European Physical Journal B .
