Ayaş is a municipality in the Erdemli district of the Turkish province of Mersin . Since a regional reform in 2014, the place is no longer a municipality, but a district of the district town of Erdemli.
Ayaş is located in the south of the district on the Mediterranean Sea on the D-400 highway, about 20 kilometers southwest of the district town of Erdemli and 55 kilometers southwest of the provincial capital Mersin . Ayaş consists of the parts Merdivenlikuyu and Yemişkumu. The main source of income for the place is tourism.
About ten kilometers east of Ayaş the Limonlu Çayı (ancient Lamos ) flows into the sea, which in ancient times formed the border between the plains (Kilikia Pedias) and the rough Cilicia (Kilikia Tracheia) . In the center of Ayaş are the ruins of the ancient city of Elaiussa Sebaste and about seven kilometers northeast of the center, in Kumkuyu / Tirtar, the area of Akkale . In the north of the village, about 2.5 kilometers inland, there is a collapse doline with the remains of the town of Kanytelleis , which at times belonged to Elaiussa Sebaste.
