Kumkuyu was a municipality in the district of Erdemli of the Turkish province of Mersin . Since a regional reform in 2014, the place is no longer a municipality, but a district of the district town of Erdemli.
Kumkuyu is located in the south of the district on the Mediterranean Sea on the D-400 highway, about 15 kilometers southwest of the district town of Erdemli and 50 kilometers southwest of the provincial capital Mersin . The main source of income for the place is tourism.
The previous place name was Tırtar. This name was derived from the semi-nomadic tribe of the Tırtar, who settled in the area from 1950.
About six kilometers northeast of Kumkuyu, the Limonlu Çayı (ancient Lamos ) flows into the sea, which in ancient times formed the border between the plains (Kilikia Pedias) and the rough Kilikien (Kilikia Tracheia) . In the area of the municipality, between the road and the Mediterranean Sea, lies the late Roman-Early Byzantine ruins of Akkale . In the north of the village, about 2.5 kilometers inland, there is a collapse doline with the remains of the city of Kanytelleis , which at times belonged to Elaiussa Sebaste , the remains of which can be found about seven kilometers southwest in Ayaş .
