Aydın Canel

Aydın Canel (* 1942 in Heybeliada , Istanbul ) is a former Turkish rear admiral who was, among other things, commander in chief of the coast guard ( Türk Sahil Güvenlik Komutanlığı ) between 1994 and 1996 .

Life

Training and employment as a naval officer

Canel began after attending the sea cadet institute ( Deniz Lisesi ) in 1957 an officer training at the naval school ( Deniz Harp Okulu ), which he completed in 1961. Subsequently, he found employment as a naval officer on various ships and command posts in the Navy ( Türk Deniz Kuvvetleri ) such as chief engineer , first officer and commander of a hunting submarine. He was then from 1967 to 1969 as first lieutenant in the sea ( Üsteğmen ), first officer of the mine-hunting boat TCG Samsun (M-510) and from 1969 to 1971 as a lieutenant captain ( Yüzbaşı ) in command of the mine-hunting boat TCG Sinop (M-258) . After graduating from the Naval Academy ( Deniz Harp Akademisi ) from 1971 to 1973 , he was employed for one year in the General Staff of Turkey , where he was an officer in the intelligence department. From 1974 to 1975 he was in command of the TCG Denizkuşu (P-321) , a torpedo speedboat of the Zobel class taken over by the German Navy , and from 1975 to 1976 as Korvettenkapitän ( Binbaşı ) commander of the II. Schnellbootgruppe.

Then Canel was first officer in 1976 on the Fletcher-class destroyer TCG İzmit (D 342) and in 1977 commander of the TCG Sivrihisar , before he was lecturer and head of the planning section at the Naval Academy for some time in 1978. In 1978 he was promoted to frigate captain ( Yarbay ) and appointed naval attaché at the embassy in Italy . On his return, he served as the last in command of the TCG Iskenderun (D-343) , a Fletcher-class destroyer , between 1980 and 1981 . After he was promoted to captain at sea ( Albay ) in 1981 , he initially acted as commander of the training regiment of the naval academy, then as commodore of the III. Schnellboot Flotilla and most recently as head of the planning group in the fleet command ( Donanma Komutanlığı ) at the Gölcük naval base ( Gölcük Ana Üs Komutanlığı ).

Promotion to rear admiral

On August 30, 1988 Canel was promoted to Flotilla Admiral ( Tuğamiral ) and changed as a staff officer for basic planning in the command of the Allied Naval Forces Southern Europe NAVSOUTH ( Naval Forces Southern Europe ) in Nisida . After his return he was in command of the Naval School between 1990 and 1992.

After Canel had received his promotion to Rear Admiral ( Tümamiral ) on August 30, 1992 , he served between 1992 and 1994 as commander of the landing craft associations ( Çıkarma Filosu Komutanlığı ). On August 10, 1994 he finally succeeded Rear Admiral Niyazi Ulusoy as Commander in Chief of the Coast Guard ( Türk Sahil Güvenlik Komutanlığı ) and held this position until he was replaced by Rear Admiral Alper Çetin Tezeren on August 14, 1996. He then resigned on August 30 1996 early retirement.

Aydın Canel, who is married to Samra Canel and has a son, speaks not only Turkish but also English and Italian .
