Ayuko Itō ( Japanese 伊藤 亜 由 子 , Itō Ayuko ; born September 29, 1986 in Shizuoka Prefecture ) is a Japanese short tracker .

Career

At the age of thirteen, Itō took the relay for the first time at a major international event, the 2003 Junior World Championship in Budapest , where she immediately won the bronze medal. A year later in Beijing in her first individual starts, she advanced over 1,500 meters to the semi-finals. After these good results, the Japanese federation started her for the first time at the age of 14 in the Short Track World Cup in February 2004, where she was disqualified with the relay in the semi-finals. In the 2004/05 season, the Japanese did not achieve any great success in the World Cup either, the best result was a 20th place over 500 meters. For this she reached the semi-finals again in two races at the Junior World Championships in Belgrade in 2005 . Another year later, at the same event, this time in Miercurea Ciuc , she finished fourth over 1500 meters.

The 2006/07 World Cup season was quite successful for Itō, with a tenth place over 500 meters she achieved her first top 10 result. A year later, she improved her best World Cup result to ninth place, which she also achieved over 500 meters in Heerenveen . In addition, she placed herself on the podium with the relay as third at the home World Cup in Kobe . As in the previous year, it did not start at major events. Also at the beginning of the World Cup in 2008/09 , Itō achieved good results, including eighth place in Nagano , again at the home World Cup. At the 2009 World Championships in Vienna , 14th place over 1000 m was her best individual result. The following season she reached second place with the relay at the World Cup in Seoul . At her first Olympic participation in Vancouver in 2010 , she came in 18th place over 1000 m and in seventh place with the relay. Her best individual placement at the following World Championships in Sofia was 13th over 500 m. In the 2011/12 season she took second place once and three times third place in the World Cup with the relay. Over 1000 m, she came in the top ten several times during the season and thus achieved eighth place in the overall World Cup over 1000 m. At the 2012 World Championships in Shanghai , she finished tenth over 1000 m, ninth place over 1500 m and fifth place over 500 m and thus reached 15th place in the all-around event. Also in the following season he came in second place once and three times in third place in the World Cup with the relay. At the 2013 World Championships in Debrecen , she won the silver medal with the relay. Her best placement in the individual was fourth place over 1500 m. In the following year she finished 22nd place over 1000 m, 19th place over 500 m and 18th place over 1500 m at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi . With the season she achieved fifth place. In February 2016 she was third in the relay at the World Cup in Dresden and in the following month she achieved seventh place in the relay at the World Championships in Seoul. At the Winter Asian Games 2017 in Sapporo , she won the silver medal over 500 m. In March 2017 she won the bronze medal with the relay at the World Championships in Rotterdam .
