history

Bärenplatz around 1810

The square was built over the filled-in ditch in front of the third city fortifications, and the first bear pit was set up on its northern part in 1513 . The moat bridge in front of the Käfigturm only disappeared in 1578, and a year later the southern part of the moat was filled. This part of the square was subsequently called the Hay and Wood Market. The Rossmarkt was moved there in 1627. After the bear pit was laid in front of the Golatenmatttor in 1763, the northern part of the square was called the Holzmarkt and the middle part was called the Viehmarkt. Until 1823 the entire square was then called Oberer Platz, and the name Bärenplatz did not appear until the middle of the 19th century. In 1864 the square was paved. From 1895 (when the old casino was demolished) to around 1900 (when the parliament building was built), the old casino square also belonged to Bärenplatz. In 1901 the Bärenplatz fountain was moved from the northwest corner of today's Bundesplatz to the center of Bärenplatz.
