Bécancour ( pronunciation : [ bekɑ̃kuʁ ]) is a city ( ville ) and capital of the MRC Bécancour of the same name in the Canadian province of Québec .
It is located at the mouth of the Bécancour River in the St. Lawrence River opposite the city of Trois-Rivières .
Bécancour received town charter on October 17, 1965. The namesake is Pierre Robineau, second Baron of Portneuf and Lord of Bécancour (1654-1724). The city has a seaport on the Saint Lawrence River. The Gentilly nuclear power plant is located in the Gentilly district . The city's most famous personality is the natural scientist Léon Abel Provancher (* 1820, † 1892).
In the urban area of Bécancour lies the Wôlinak Indian reservation , which is inhabited by around 170 members of the Waban-Aki Nation .
