Béla Tarczai

Béla Tarczai (born October 21, 1922 in Miskolc ; † February 26, 2013 ibid) was a Hungarian photo artist, founder of the Miskolc Photography Club and the Association of Former Prisoners of War in Miskolc.

Live and act

Béla Tarczai taught cultural anthropology at Miskolc University . In order to revive the creativity of photographers after the war, he founded the Miskolc Photography Association and did research on photo museology in the Ottó-Herman Museum. His pictures have been shown in many exhibitions. His wife was Maria Varga (1925–1999), they raised three daughters and had five grandchildren.

Miskolc Photography Association

Tarczai started taking photos while still in high school . Later he regularly participated in the meetings of the National Association of Hungarian Amateur Photographers (MAOSZ). After the Second World War , the MAOSZ could no longer function. In order to revive the movement, Tarczai founded the later Miskolc Photography Association. The first national exhibition was organized in 1955 and in 1962 the first international exhibition also took place.

In 1958 Tarczai won a prize in the national competition of the Hungarian Association of Photographers and in 1960 he became a member of this association. The International Photography Association ( FIAP ) honored him with the artistic degree of Artiste-FIAP in 1964, and in 1967 with the FIAP Excellence Award .

Worked in the Ottó Herman Museum

In 1985 he founded the collection for historical photography (Ottó-Herman-Museum), which was based primarily on photos by photographers from the district. During his work he explored the basics of photo museology. He published his research results in Graz (1993) and Mannheim (1994). Since 1971 he was a member of the Foundation for Art, later the MAOE.

Former prisoner of war of the western allies

After the regime change in Hungary it became possible to research the history of the prisoners of war of the western allies. Tarczai has written a book on the subject and another on his own history as a survivor. In 1988 he founded the Miskolc Association of Former Prisoners of War. In 1991, Béla Tarczai joined the Federation of the Revitalized National Organization. In 1999 the organization became a member of the International Union of Prisoners of War.
