The Búrfell (í Grímsnesi) is a 534 m high extinct volcano from the Ice Age in the municipality of Grímsnes og Grafningur in southern Iceland .

Location and characteristics

The mountain is about 4 km east of the Úlfljótsvatn and about 6 km southeast of the Þingvallavatn .

The mountain was formed in a glacial period towards the end of the penultimate ice age ( Saale glacial period ) and is around 120,000 years old.

There is disagreement regarding the type of volcanic mountain. In the Vísindavefurinn of the University of Iceland it is referred to as a palagonite mountain , Ari Trausti refers to it as a table volcano .

There is a small lake on the summit plateau of the mountain.

Surname

The name Búrfell means pantry mountain in German . Since there are numerous mountains with this name in Iceland, they are differentiated by nicknames.

hike

A hiking trail up the mountain begins southeast of the Ljósafossvirkjun power station on the Sog River .

farm

At the foot of the mountain is u. a. a farm of the same name.

Lt. Conquest book lived there at the beginning of the colonization of Iceland, a man named Grímur, the eponymous district Grímsnes to the lake all today Svínavatn took into his possession.
