Zaļo un Zemnieku savienība ( ZZS ; German  Alliance of Greens and Peasants ) is a political association of the Latvian Farmers' Union and the Latvian Green Party.

The association consists of the Latvian Farmers' Union (Latvian: Latvijas Zemnieku savienība - LZS ) and the Green Party of Latvia (Latvian: Latvijas Zaļā partija - LZP ). In addition, two local parties work with the alliance, the Liepājas partija (LP) and Latvijai un Ventspilij (LV).

With Māris Kučinskis (LP) as Prime Minister and Raimonds Vējonis (LZP) as President, the alliance held the two highest state offices in Latvia from 2016 to 2019.

Program

The alliance combines the politics of the LZS, a classic Nordic farmers' party , with the green ideology of the LZP. For example, it advocates small-scale agriculture, which is also seen as more sensible from an ecological point of view. The alliance is slightly skeptical of the EU . It does not reject Latvia's membership of the EU, but it has taken a position against the introduction of the euro in Latvia. The ZZS also rejects the easing of naturalization and local voting rights for foreigners.

International connections

While the LZP is a member of the European Green Party and the Global Greens , the LZS does not belong to any international party association. In the European Parliament, Iveta Grigule (LZS) , the only MP to date, joined the EU-critical parliamentary group Europe of Freedom and Direct Democracy after the 2014 election . However, she left this in October 2014 and joined the liberal ALDE group in April 2015 .
