The referendum on the election of the Lord Mayor of Duisburg took place on February 12, 2012. It led to Adolf Sauerland being voted out of office , who came under heavy pressure due to the accident at the Love Parade in 2010 .

prehistory

A resolution by the city council of Duisburg to vote out the mayor on September 13, 2010 failed because the two-thirds majority required for this was not achieved. 41 council members voted for Sauerland to be deselected, 28 voted against. Five council members were absent from the vote.

On May 18, 2011, at the request of the Left , the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia passed the law to initiate voting procedures for mayors and district administrators through citizens' petitions . It was only through this law that mayors and district administrators in North Rhine-Westphalia could be voted out.

As a result, the citizens' initiative Neuanfang für Duisburg , consisting of Werner Hüsken, Theo Steegmann and Harald Jochums, collected over 79,000 signatures by mid-October for a referendum to vote out Duisburg's Mayor Adolf Sauerland, 68,000 of which were recognized by the electoral office. This corresponded to almost 22% or almost 19% of the almost 365,000 citizens of Duisburg who are eligible to vote , which means that the quorum of 15% required for this referendum was achieved. The date for voting out was set for February 12, 2012.

consequences

On February 15, 2012, the electoral committee decided that he had been voted out of office, so that Adolf Sauerland resigned from office as Lord Mayor of Duisburg at the end of that day .

The official business was provisionally taken over by the city director Peter Greulich (tasks of the head of administration) and the previous First Mayor Benno Lensdorf (representative tasks, chairing the council meetings). The elders agreed on 17 June 2012 as the election date for the successor, subject to the approval of the Regional Council of Dusseldorf. In the election on June 17, 2012, Sören Link (SPD) received 48.3% of the vote, ahead of his CDU opponent Benno Lensdorf, who achieved 21.12%, but missed an absolute majority. In the runoff election on July 1, 2012, Sören Link achieved 71.96% of the vote and was elected the new Lord Mayor of the city of Duisburg.
