Gian Lorenzo Bernini created several busts of Pope Paul V from the Borghese family .

history

In 1621 Bernini created another marble bust on behalf of Cardinal Scipione Borghese , the Pope's nephew. In 1632 Bernini created a counterpart bust of Scipione Borghese, the two busts were placed in the Villa Borghese in Rome. The pope bust was sold in 1893 and entered a Viennese collection. This arrived in Slovakia and was purchased by the Getty Museum in Los Angeles in mid-2015 .

A bronze version of the marble bust is in the possession of the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen and has been on permanent loan at the Statens Museum for Kunst in Copenhagen since 1929 .

Another marble bust, which depends on the first and is dated around 1622/23, is now in the Galleria Borghese in Rome.

Litigation in Slovakia

The sale of the marble bust is seen in Slovakia as an illegal export of cultural property . The French art dealer Clément Guenebeaud acquired the bust of the heirs of the painter and art collector Ernest Zmeták (1919–2004) for 24,000 euros . A value of 7 million euros was already stated in the export application. As a result, it was suspected that the responsible export officer had been bribed . A later sale through the Sotheby’s auction house achieved a price of 33 million US dollars .

As a consequence, the Minister of Culture of Slovakia, Marek Maďarič , filed a criminal complaint and dismissed the head of the cultural heritage department and the official who had signed the export application. The Getty Museum sees no reason to return the work.
