The Bützsee is a natural lake in the area of the Fehrbelliner district Wustrau-Altfriesack in the district of Ostprignitz-Ruppin in Brandenburg . It is located in the Rhinluch about one kilometer southeast of the Ruppiner See .
Location and description
The Bützsee has an area of 221 hectares and with 633 km² a very large catchment area. The lake is very shallow, so the bottom is only four meters below the water surface at its deepest point. It is traversed from northwest to southeast by the Rhin, which flows in from the Ruppiner See and leaves the Bützsee as Bützrhin. After a few kilometers it splits into two branches. One branch, initially called the Alter Rhin, flows west through the Rhinkanal and the Gülper See near Rhinow into the lower Havel . The other runs as Kremmener Rhin to the east into the Kremmener See and then over the Ruppiner Canal to Oranienburg to the canal cross with the Oranienburger Canal next to the upper Havel .
The landscape around the lake is typical of the Rhinluch. Mainly grassland , deciduous forests , nutrient-rich waters and wide silting areas as well as fens and swamps can be found in the area. These biotopes provide habitats for numerous species of birds such as thousands of Nordic geese resting there every year. In the Middle Ages, on the north bank of the Bützsee, the Altfriesack castle wall was probably a cult center of the Slavic tribe of the Zamzizi .
In the middle of the lake is an approximately 17 hectare island that is heavily overgrown and cannot be entered.
