history

The Benedictine monk Gunther left the Rinchnach monastery he founded and ran in 1040 in order to spend the end of his life as a hermit again. He settled in the Bohemian Forest and built his hermitage above an old trading path on a rock, where he died on October 9, 1045. The Bohemian Duke Břetislav I had the remains of Gunther transferred to the Břevnov monastery .

The hermitage was later inhabited by other hermits. After Gunther was venerated as a saint, the landlord Čejka von Olbramovice had a wooden chapel built on the Gunther rock and a stone chapel in Gutwasser at the beginning of the 17th century, both of which were consecrated to St. Gunther. Gutwasser, which was also called St. Gunthersbad, and St. Guntherberg developed into one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the Bohemian Forest.

After the Second World War, the Dobrá Voda military training area was built in the 1950s. The chapel was destroyed. After the military training area was closed, a new stone chapel was built on the Guntherfelsen in 1992.
