B-Legit (* 15. November 1971 in Vallejo , California as Brandt Jones ) is an American rapper of styles of West Coast hip hop and gangsta rap .

biography

B-Legit is part of The Click . He grew up in the same household as the other members of the group, E-40 , D-Shot and Suga T , and is their cousin.

When these four people decided to seriously pursue a career in music, E-40 founded the label "Sick Wid It Records", whose Chief Operating Officer became B-Legit. In addition to the group albums, Brandt Jones' solo debut was released there in 1993, still under the longer stage name B-Legit The Savage. “Tryin 'to Get a Buck” is a classic gangsta rap work , but with the specialty that it is thematically focused on alcohol and marijuana consumption . Although it reached the “Heatseekers” and “R&B Albums” charts, it was unable to make it onto the Billboard 200 . Sick Wid It Records eventually became a sub-label of Jive Records , who re-released Tryin 'to Get a Buck in 1995.

In 1996 and 1999, Jive released two more long players with the titles "The Hemp Museum" and "Hempin 'Aint Easy". The B-Legits style remained the same, as the names show - hemp is the English word for hemp. With these albums he achieved his greatest chart success as a solo artist. Both made it into the top 100 of the US album charts.

B-Legit then adjusted its style slightly. He reduced the references to smoking marijuana on the album "Hard 2 B-Legit", released in 2002, which was interpreted as an attempt to arrive better in the mainstream . In contrast, the work sold worse than its predecessor. It only reached the top position 111 on the Billboard 200 and was only there for three weeks.

This development continued, so that all further albums either did not appear at all or only appeared in the category charts. Another chart placement was only achieved in 2018 with the collaboration album "Connected and Respected" recorded together with E-40 .
