The steam locomotive series kkStB 280 was a mountain express train - steam locomotive of the kk state railways of Austria , which was also procured by the Austrian Southern Railway .

history

The topographical characteristics of Austria as a mountainous country and the increasing train weights soon ensured that the 170 series was  too weak for express train service on the mountain routes. Karl Gölsdorf created then specifically for express trains on the Arlbergbahn the ten-coupled locomotive series  280 with four- cylinder - composite engine . Since the weak bridges did not allow for more weight, the axle mass had to be limited to 13.8 t. Gölsdorf's design is therefore a showpiece of lightweight locomotive construction.

Similar to the 110 series  , the second boiler section was enlarged conically in order to obtain more steam space. The built-in clench steam dryer did not prove itself and was removed again after 1918. Like almost all of the locomotives used on the Arlberg, the machines received additional oil firing in order to reduce smoke development in the tunnels.

The three locomotives were supplied by the StEG locomotive factory in 1906/07 .

On the Arlberg east ramp with a gradient of 26 ‰, the 280s carried a 280 t train (equivalent to seven fully occupied four-axle vehicles) at 32 km / h. During test drives, 92 km / h were achieved on the plane. At 50 km / h the 280s made 1650 hp.

Due to the triumphant advance of the superheated steam locomotives , no further 280s were ordered by the kkStB.

After the First World War , all three machines came to the BBÖ , which converted two of them to superheated steam, but decommissioned them in 1929/30 for lack of success. The third machine only survived a year longer.

The Südbahn procured (two) and 1911 (three) of the 280 series for mountain service on the Brenner . The locomotive factory Floridsdorf acted as a supplier.

After 1918 the five machines were assigned to the FS , which they classified as series  478 . In 1945, when Istria was ceded , two of them went to JDŽ as  07-16 and 17 .
