The steam locomotive series kkStB T was a narrow gauge - Tender Locomotive series of Imperial State Railways of Austria . It was the smallest narrow-gauge locomotive of the kkStB and also of the later ÖBB .

construction

In 1897, the Krauss locomotive factory in Linz developed a light C1'-coupled narrow-gauge tender locomotive with the Krauss A VIII boiler , based on experience with the U series .

The machines were much weaker than the U series  . Like the U series, the T had an inner frame for the coupling axles, which merged into an outer frame for the towing axle, which allowed the installation of a wide fire box . It was equipped with a Heusinger control that operated on a flat slide . The spring balance valves common at the time served as safety valves, and the chimney was equipped with a pebble as a spark arrester .

history

Postcard from 1900 with Klein Glödnitz station and a train with a T.3 locomotive

The first locomotive of this type was delivered to the Bosnian Holzverwertungs AG in Teslić , which it used on its forest railway network under the name DD1.

The kkStB procured three of these narrow-gauge locomotives in 1898 for the Gurktalbahn from Treibach-Althofen to Klein Glödnitz . The name of this series of locomotives also results from the first letter of Treibach. In 1902 two more pieces of this series were added to the Kühnsdorf - Eisenkappel ( Vellachtalbahn ) local railway, which opened on October 5, 1902 , and which was initially operated by the kkStB. On May 20, 1903, management was transferred to the Südbahn (SB). Between 1898 and 1904 three locomotives were delivered for forest railways in Bosnia. The T series had proven itself particularly well on the Gurktalbahn, as it did not have any significant gradients. In the Vellachtal, however, they were much more challenged due to the incline and were previously replaced by stronger types.

In 1931, with the nationalization of the Gurktalbahn, the three kkStB locomotives came to the BBÖ . Of the two southern railway machines, the T.5 remained on the Vellachtalbahn and was named BBÖ T.4 after its nationalization. It was retired in 1932. The original T.4 had been transported away by troops of the SHS state during the Carinthian defensive battle . It was used as 187-001 of the JDŽ on various narrow-gauge railways in Yugoslavia.

The three Gurktaler T were renamed in 1938 by the Deutsche Reichsbahn as 99 7801-7803. After the Second World War , the three locomotives came to the ÖBB , which they designated according to the numbering scheme from 1953 as  198.01-03 . In the 1950s, 198.01 and 02 were still in operation on the Gurktalbahn as a reserve, 198.03 was last stationed on the Vellachtalbahn. By 1960 they were retired and scrapped. Initiatives by railway enthusiasts to keep 198.01 as a museum piece failed due to financial resources.

The DD1 locomotive of the Usora Valley Railway (never referred to as a T) was the only locomotive in the series that remained . It was erected as a memorial in Teslić.
