The BMPT (also BMP-T , Russian Боевая машина поддержки танков , Bojewaja maschina podderschki tankow , in German: " Panzerunterstützungsfahrzeug ") is a heavily armored Russian combat support vehicle of the Uralwagonsawod company . It is intended to support its own armored forces by fighting light ground and air units that can be dangerous to the former. For example, the BMPT should fight enemy tanks , armored personnel carriers or machine gun positions in order to facilitate the advance of its own troops. The BMPT are to replace the mechanized infantry on the battlefield , which is intended to support their own armored forces. Mass production did not take place until 2017, but several lots were built in small series.

history

The experience gained in the Soviet-Afghan war and in the first and second Chechnya wars revealed the inefficiency of battle tanks and armored infantry escort vehicles in asymmetrical conflicts . Main battle tanks like the T-72 were unsuitable for this because they were too often ambushed and destroyed. The two machine guns of the main battle tanks were almost useless in this type of close combat, since the unprotected external machine gun could not be used without endangering the operator, while the coaxial machine gun did not have sufficient visibility and swiveling options at close range. It was then decided to build a tank that would fight infantry, air targets and tanks with good efficiency in almost any type of terrain and in any weather condition. A company was to be equipped with vehicles by 2010, but this was not implemented. At the beginning of 2010 it was officially announced that no further vehicles of the type BMPT would be purchased.

At the beginning of 2013, the arms company Uralwagonsawod presented a stripped-down version of the BMPT-72 Terminator 2 based on the chassis of the T-72 tank. This is offered exclusively for export and should be more cost-effective than the original model.

technology

The BMPT is one of the most technically advanced support vehicles in the world.

The fire control system has laser range finders, day, night and thermal vision devices as well as various sensors, e.g. B. Cross wind, tilt, own and target speed, selected weapon and turret position. Automatic target tracking is also possible. The BMPT can theoretically fight five targets at the same time, which gave it the unofficial name "Terminator".

GLONASS receivers are used for navigation .

Tub

The tub of the BMPT is identical to that of the T-90A. The bow is reinforced with composite armor . In addition, reactive armor modules of the Relikt type are installed on the bow . The two sides of the tub are completely protected with heavy panels, which also act as spacer armor. Cage armor is used at the rear left, at the level of the exhaust openings and at the rear. The fighting area is lined with a splinter protection, the seats are attached to the tub roof. The KMT-8 minesweeper can be attached to the bow.

tower

The turret is only weakly armored. The front of the turret is partially protected by reactive armor, the rear by additional cage armor. The directional range is 360 horizontally and vertically - 5 to + 45 degrees.

Armament

Field use

The BMPT is intended to support the tank units. Its main task is to fight enemy infantry and tank destruction troops in confusing terrain and to defend against combat helicopters. During their own attack, the BMPT move behind their own battle tanks , as the turret with the weapon system is relatively unprotected against the fire of enemy battle tanks. In this case, they could only have operated under the protection of their own battle tanks. However, the fight against armored vehicles from z. B. covered position with the help of the anti-tank missiles carried.

commitment

According to official Russian information, the BMPT-72 was used as part of the Russian military operation in Syria.
