Grün-Weiß Steinbach-Hallenberg was founded in 1945 under the name SG Steinbach-Hallenberg . The loose sports group won the championship in the Schmalkalden district in 1948 and was promoted to the Thuringia regional league of the SBZ . The sports community initially held the top division of the time for one season, but was relegated in the following season with just four season points.

From 1950, the SG started with the support of the carrier company as BSG Motor Steinbach-Hallenberg . Motor Steinbach-Hallenberg only operated in the lower class until the sixties, but rose in the 1962/63 season for the first time in the then third-class football district league Suhl . The top division of the Suhl district was held by the Rennsteig team with brief interruptions until 1990. Motor Steinbach-Hallenberg achieved the best placings in 1972 and 1980 with third places in each case, and in order to advance to the GDR league , the BSG played behind Motor Oberlind , Vorwärts Bad Salzungen and Motor Steinach do not matter.

After the reunification, Motor Steinbach-Hallenberg won the Suhl district league for the first time and rose to the newly founded Thuringia league , from which the club, now renamed Grün-Weiß Steinbach-Hallenberg , together with Kali Werra Tiefenort, relegated after only one season.

In the period that followed, the club was only active in local football in southern Thuringia. The first team to compete since 2010 in a syndicate with SV Blau-Weiß Herges-Hallenberg under the name "SG Steinbach / Herges-Hallenberg" secured the championship and on the last day of the 2010/11 season in the regional class Season 8 rose to the seventh-class state class south.

At the beginning of 2015, the FSV Grün-Weiß Steinbach-Hallenberg merged with the SV Blau-Weiß Herges-Hallenberg to form the Steinbach-Hallenberg football club.
