BYU Vocal Point

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

BYU Vocal Point is an a cappella group consisting of nine singers . It is based in Provo , Utah . The abbreviation BYU in their name refers to the denominational Brigham Young University there .

Band history

The group was founded as Vocal Point in 1991 by Bob Ahlander and Dave Boyce, both students at Brigham Young University. The group's first concert was already sold out and their first album If Rocks Could Sing was released. The group was so successful after just three years that the director of the music department (School of Music) at the university was of the opinion that it would be officially incorporated into the university, hence the suffix BYU .

In the early 2000s, the group twice won the regional semifinals for the international championships of the Collegiate A Cappella, but both times they refused to take part in the finals in New York City for religious reasons , as this took place on a Sunday. After winning the third semi-final in 2006, they were finally able to take part in the final because this time it took place on a Saturday. There they were elected International Champion .

There is often a change in the members of the group.

The group is still successful today.
