Babcock & Wilcox (full name: Babcock & Wilcox Enterprises, Inc. , abbreviated B&W ) is an American manufacturer of conventional and nuclear steam generators based in Charlotte, North Carolina . In addition to the headquarters, B&W has offices in several locations in the USA, Canada , China and Europe .

Products

The company was and is still a leading manufacturer of conventional steam boilers in North America and internationally . B&W developed the first boiler with dust firing for coal and built the first Benson boiler ( supercritical forced flow boiler ). In World War II was more than half of steam-powered ships of the Navy of the United States by vessel of B & W driven. Boilers from B&W corresponding to an electrical output of around 270 gigawatts are in operation in power plants around the world  .

In addition to conventional boilers, the company is also a major manufacturer of nuclear steam generators, nuclear reactors and other nuclear technology. Among other things, B&W was involved in the development of the reactor for the USS Nautilus (SSN-571) (the world's first nuclear submarine ) and the accident reactor for the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant . Today, B&W and Bechtel operate the high-security facility " Y-12 National Security Complex " for the United States Department of Energy , which used to be part of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and which still produces highly enriched uranium for civil and military purposes. Furthermore, B&W has been operating the Los Alamos National Laboratory for nuclear research since 2005 .

The company was founded in Providence in 1867 by Stephen Wilcox and his partner George Babcock with the aim of manufacturing the particularly safe and efficient water-tube boiler , patented by Wilcox in 1856 as a "Non-Explosive Boiler" (German: non- explosive boiler ) .

In 2000, B&W had to seek Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection over claims for damages . In 2006 the company was able to leave Chapter 11 behind. In 2007, B&W and BWX Technologies, both subsidiaries of McDermott International, merged to form The Babcock and Wilcox Companies , led by John Fees .

Babcock in Europe, especially Germany

Via the European subsidiary Babcock & Wilcox Ltd. Deutsche Babcock & Wilcox Dampfkessel-Werke Aktien-Gesellschaft (later called Deutsche Babcock for short ) was founded in London in 1898 . The Spanish section (based in Bilbao ) was established in 1918 as a locomotive factory. In the beginning only steam locomotives were built, later electric locomotives were added. After the Spanish Civil War, 173 war-damaged locomotives were repaired. Babcock was also the last manufacturer to still build steam locomotives for Spain. Today Babcock Wilcox Española SA u. a. Steam power plants.
