Babe is a municipality in the district of Bragança in the northeast of Portugal with 238 inhabitants (2011).

history

At the time of the Roman occupation, the place was on the road from Bracara Oppidum Augusta (today's Braga ) to today's Astorga , the then Asturica Augusta .

1387 was here the Treaty of Babe ( Tratado de Babe ) between the Portuguese king D. João I and John of Gaunt, 1st Duke of Lancaster , closed. To strengthen the seal of the Treaty of Windsor (1386) , the Duke of Lancaster married his daughter, Philippa of Lancaster D. João, and she became Queen of Portugal. One of their children was Heinrich the Navigator .

economy

Agriculture with olives and viticulture is characteristic of the area, and small businesses in trade, construction and gastronomy are located here. The place suffers from emigration, like many other comparable places in the region.

Culture, sports and sights

The ethnographic museum (Museu Etnográfico Rural de Babe) with the estate of Dr. Belarmino Afonso. The main Manueline church and the various chapels and fountains are also worth seeing .

In 2012, for the third year in a row , the municipality of Babe organized the Dia do Desporto (Day of Sports), on which, in addition to football and futsal , a number of local, traditional games are played.
