History of origin
The recordings were made in the renowned Quad Teck and Mystic Sound Studios in Los Angeles. The cover was designed by photographer Ronn Spencer, who u. a. also worked for the Sex Pistols and now teaches graphic design and photography at the University of Arizona . Spencer ran a label called White Noise Recordings in the late 1970s, on which the Angry Samoans predecessor band VOM released.
A short time after the album was released, the band released older versions of some tracks from Back from Samoa as an EP called The Deprtaved under the pseudonym The Queer Pills with a fictitious label . The album, originally only as Vinyl - LP existed, was in 1990 by Triple X Records reissued on CD.
Individual titles
- Lights out
The song Lights Out was covered by numerous bands, such as the Spermbirds (1987), The Accüsed (1988), The Mighty Mighty Bosstones (1993) and Pig Destroyer (2012).
- They Saved Hitler's Cock
At They Saved Hitler's Cock has Jeff Dahl co-written, which also for the song Ballad of Jerry Curlan has recorded the bass. The song brought Gregg Turner into professional difficulties when he was recognized by several students as a former Angry Samoans musician during his time as a mathematics teacher at a college in Santa Fe , whereupon they intoned the title of the piece to the confusion of their classmates. Since the school management was not aware of the connections, Turner was called in to explain himself.
- Ballad of Jerry Curlan
The piece Ballad of Jerry Curlan goes back to a former classmate of Gregg Turner's little brother Ron. Jerry Kurlan (the name was changed slightly for legal reasons) was presented by Turner's mother to the band members as a shining example in terms of lifestyle. In the song, the band contrasts statements made by their mother, which are sung by Saunders, with their own assessments of Kurlan's character, which the band shouted in the form of increasingly abstruse insults.
reception
The tastelessness and aggressiveness of the lyrics were highlighted in a positive and negative way. LA Weekly highlighted the band's humor and picked Back from Samoa at number 20 on their list of LA's greatest punk albums. The music critic Robert Christgau gave it an A rating and emphasized the humor of the lyrics and the catchy melodies. The music magazine Punknews described Back to Samoa as "definitely one of the catchiest, funniest and filthiest punk albums of all time". The band play on the album precisely and powerfully, and Saunders' voice has a snotty charm that reminds me of Milo Aukerman .
