Spermbirds is a German hardcore punk band that was founded in 1983 in Kaiserslautern .

Band history

Founding and dissolution in 1995/6

After the increasing commercialization of punk rock in the early 1980s, many bands and music consumers turned to the faster, harder and more politically influenced hardcore music. In 1983 Lee, Markus, Frank, Roger and Matthias from Kaiserslautern founded the band Spermbirds . At times Joe Strübe was also a member of the early formation. In addition to the more classic UK punk bands such as Wire , Angelic Upstarts or the Buzzcocks , American hardcore bands such as Minor Threat , Black Flag and Agent Orange also played a key role in the band's sound. Over the years the Spermbirds released numerous singles and albums.

In 1991/92 Lee Hollis left the band in order to dedicate himself more intensively to his second project 2 Bad, which had existed since 1987/88 . The rest of the band wanted to continue their musical work and found a new singer in Ken Haus: At the end of 1992 he joined the Spermbirds and recorded two albums with them. But after a few tours, the collaboration with Ken Haus could not continue due to interpersonal problems.

After a temporary breakup (1988-'89), the Spermbirds said goodbye, for the last time with both singers, in September 1995 with a two-hour concert in front of 1,100 fans in their hometown of Kaiserslautern. This show was released the following year, supposedly the last CD Get Off The Stage - The Last Concert .

1999 until today

In 1999 Lee Hollis called the band members together and the band made a comeback . Concerts followed in front of sold-out halls. They wanted to record a new album, but since some members now had steady jobs, children and their own bands, the songwriting for a new album took over six years. The album Set An Example was released in 2004. In 2007 founding member Frank Rahm left and was replaced by Steve Wiles - the double DVD Me And My People from the same year, consisting of a live and a documentary part, is for long-time member Rahm dedicated. The preparations for the current album Columbus Feeling , which was released in 2010 via Rookie Records , also took several years . In 2019 the band released the album "Go To Hell Then Turn Left".

Others

The band members "Beppo" (drums) and Frank (guitar) also play with the punk band Kick Joneses , also from Kaiserslautern. Lee Hollis has been the singer for Steakknife since 1990 . Markus Weilemann and Frank Rahm broadened their musical horizons in 1996 with the crossover project Super Gouge and released a little-noticed CD called Deep Sea Fishing .
