Genepool is a German post-punk band from Cologne .

history

The band was founded in 2000 by Thilo Schenk and Kolja Matzke under the name Cleaner . A little later, Andi Lehmann and Paco Delgado completed the band's first line-up. Due to the name claims of a band of the same name from the USA, the band renamed itself Genepool in 2001 and released their debut album A Technical Device For Sex on bluNoise Records in the same year .

After singer and bassist Andi Lehmann left Genepool in 2003, the band, together with bassist Guido Lucas and singer Jack Letten from Smoke Blow, set about recording their second album Everything Goes In Circles , which was then released on Noisolution in 2004. On the following tour Jack Letten was represented by Christian Schwieghusen, the ex-singer of the Rostok Vampires , due to obligations at Smoke Blow .

In 2006 Kolja Matzke left the band and was replaced by Jens Küchenthal and Spiro Kotsomitopoulos . While both drummers shared the recordings for the record Sendung Signals , the following live concerts were played alone with Jens Küchenthal.

2008 was the year of big changes for Genepool. It became known that Jack Letten had left the band in all friendship to concentrate more on his main band Smoke Blow. His successor was Ian Spehr, front man of the noise rock band Minkstole . From then on Jens Küchenthal and Spiro Kotsomitopoulos drummed at the same time at the concerts. They also changed their label and signed a new contract with Rookie Records from Cologne.

At the beginning of 2009, Genepool went to the BluBox studio in Troisdorf to write and record the successor to Sendung Signals. Run! Run! was released on January 29, 2010 on Rookie Records.

After a tour in March and April 2010, it was announced via Twitter in June that the successor was already running! Run! being worked. On January 24th, 2011 the band announced on their website that the new album would be titled Spalter! and will be released on March 25, 2011 on Rookie Records.

In June 2012 Genepool released three cover songs via itunes in which they paid homage to their musical role models: “No Tears” by Tuxedomoon , “I'm Falling” by Ministry and “Geisterbahn fahrn” by Extrabreit . The drummer Spiro Kotsomitopoulos can be heard here on the synthesizer for the first time.

They also announced that Guido Lucas was no longer a member of the band. The new man on bass is called Christian Labs.

In May 2013 Genepool went to the High Tide Studio with producer Bastian Hartmann. The songs from this session, "Gimme Some More Rope" and "Sometimes I Wish I Had A Gun", were offered for free download in September 2013 via Bandcamp.

In 2014 Genepool recorded a new record in Tonstudio 45 under the guidance of Kurt Ebelhäuser . In 2015, “Complex” was released in a strictly limited edition on Rookie Records.

In the same year the band took an indefinite hiatus.

style

The band's sound on the first record was still heavily based on noise rock . With Everything Goes In Circles , Genepool turned to the post-punk and new wave of English bands of the early 1980s , which was significantly supported by the dark voice of Jack Letten . This direction was also maintained on the third record, Send Signals , whereby the New Wave and Pop factors increased considerably. At least since the run! Run! -LP the influences of New Wave, Krautrock and Disco of the 1970s and 1980s can no longer be ignored.
