Bad Dudes is an arcade game from the year 1988 by Data East . It's a scrolling beat 'em up .

Framework story

The intro of the game begins with "Rampant ninja related crimes these days ... Whitehouse is not the exception ..." .

The player slips into the role of a street bully named Blade or Stryker, who "President Ronnie" ( Ronald Reagan ) have to save from his kidnappers, the "Dragon Ninjas ". Another player can take on the role of the second character.

Description of the gameplay

The game is a typical representative of its genre. The player fights his way through the levels from left to right . You can use kicks, punches and jumps - and combinations thereof - to beat up the approaching opponent.

In contrast to, for example, Double Dragon or Final Fight , the player cannot go sideways into the depth of the room, but all figures move on the same line to the left and right. However, you can sometimes jump up or down a floor.

The game is divided into different levels, in each of which you meet a boss to be defeated .

When each level was successfully completed, the character / s took an "angry" pose and said: "I'm bad!"

On the way, the player will find power-ups (for time + energy bonuses) and weapons ( nunchaku and knife ).

The different types of opponents include female and male ninjas and dogs, among others. The attackers have different attacks: the normal ninja goes straight at the player, while some jump or throw throwing stars. The bosses also have their own attacks (Karnov spits fire etc.).

In the gambling halls, “Bad Dudes” was represented as an upright housing (“upright”). The control devices are an 8-way joystick and two buttons: One for jumping, the other for attacking (or interacting, e.g. picking up extras / weapons from the ground)

After the president is saved, he appears in the Oval Office and says: "Hey dudes, thanks for rescuing me. Let's go for a burger ... Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!"

Ports

The game was adapted for some home systems: Apple II , Atari ST , Amiga , Amstrad CPC , Commodore 64 , ZX Spectrum , MSX and MS-DOS in 1988 . On July 14, 1989 , the NES port was released in Japan; a North American publication followed in the same year, in Europe in 1990 .

The 8-bit versions (including the NES version) no longer had a cooperative two-player mode in which both players could play at the same time, but only alternately.

The intro on the NES was slightly changed: "The President has been kidnapped by ninjas. Are you a bad enough dude to rescue the President?" The president no longer resembled Reagan - undoubtedly a consequence of Nintendo's stance not to publish any games for NES, Gameboy or SNES (including packaging and instructions) that contain "subliminal political messages or overt political statements".

this and that

  • The game achieved a certain cult status thanks to ironic humor. There is, for example, the introduction by the United States Secret Service agent: President Ronnie has been kidnapped by the ninjas. Are you a bad enough dude to rescue Ronnie?
  • The first boss, Karnov , has his own game, “Karnov”, also from Data East - and so his appearance in “Bad Dudes” is a cameo .

The background music during this first boss fight is similar to that in Karnov . The game guide for the NES version says it is a mystery that Karnov collaborates with the ninjas.

  • The arcade game appears in the film Eine Wahnsinnsfamilie ( Parenthood ): The son of Steve Martins character wonders why the game is so difficult and Steve Martin, struggling for words, says: "Because they're ... bad dudes! "
  • The game appears in RoboCop 2 . When Robocop faces Officer Duffy in the arcade, he throws him into a slot machine. The name of the game is vague at first, but once you can clearly read "... DUDES - vs dragon ninja", and see a "Data East" logo on the side of the machine; Data East developed the Robocop Arcade game, and later one for its follow-up film.
  • On the album " The Fake Sound of Progress " by the British prog metal band Lostprophets there is a song called Shinobi vs. Dragon ninja . The title is a reference to the Shinobi series and Bad Dudes vs. Dragon ninja .
  • Three days after the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center, Newgrounds' Tom Fulp released a game called Bad Dudes vs. Bin Laden, a Flash version of the game that was modified in terms of content and the goal was to play Osama to thrash bin Laden .
  • One of the bosses is like Shredder from “ Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ”, another is the pro-wrestler “Hawk” from Legion of Doom .
