Badia Ardenga is an 11th century monastery in Italy . The former abbey is located in the middle of vineyards near Montalcino in the province of Siena ( Tuscany ).

History of the plant

Guido da Siena: Crucifixion , 13th century. Pinacoteca Nazionale, Siena; originally Badia Ardenga

The monastery was founded in the 11th century by the Vallombrosan people . It was dissolved by Pope Pius II (1405–1464).

The church of Sant'Andrea Apostolo shows traces of Romanesque construction. The bell tower (14th century) consists of arches and capitals. The oldest part under the presbytery is a 12th century crypt , which consists of seven small nave-like vaults. The monastery complex was originally built with three wings, one of which is complete, the other two as ruins; construction methods from later times can also be recognized. A loggia with stairs and portico is characteristic of the inner courtyard .

Some works of art from the Sienese school in various European museums are assigned to this system, for example in the Pinacoteca Nazionale in Siena the panel paintings for the life and passion of Christ by Guido da Siena (1275–1280).

use

The abbey has recently been used for events and rentals. The stay of a seminar group in the Badia Ardenga formed the framework for the plot of a 2003 crime novel Night of the Porcupines. Laura Gottwald's first case by Felicitas Mayall (1947–2016).

The vineyards belonging to Badia Ardenga are cultivated by a winery of the same name in a neighboring town and produce Brunello di Montalcino .
