The Baglafechtweber ( Ploceus baglafecht , Syn. Loxia baglafecht ) belongs within the family of weaver birds (Ploceidae) to the genus of the Ammerweber ( Ploceus ).

The bird is found in Africa , in Ethiopia , Burundi , Democratic Republic of the Congo , Eritrea , Cameroon , Kenya , Malawi , Nigeria , Rwanda , Zambia , South Sudan , Tanzania , Uganda and the Central African Republic .

The range includes habitats with trees and bushes , clearings and forest edges, also bushes on roadsides and gardens from 800 to 3000 m height.

features

The species is 15 cm tall and weighs between 24 and 37 g. The black eye mask including the ear covers extends to the base of the beak, the iris is white. The top is gray-brown to green, the elytra dark brown strong and light sand-colored striped. The tail is gray-brown, the legs pink, the beak is dark gray to anthracite, throat and breast are light yellow, the underside, rump and tail underside light gray.

In the subspecies reichowi, emini and the nominate form , the male has a golden yellow forehead and vertex up to eye level, the rear part of the vertex up to the nape is gray. The female has a black crown. In the subspecies stuhlmanni and sharpii , both sexes have a black crown.

Geographic variation

The following subspecies are recognized:

  • P. b. neumanni ( Bannerman , 1923) - Eastern Nigeria, Cameroon and Central African Republic
  • P. b. baglafecht ( Daudin , 1802), nominated form - English Baglafecht Weaver - western Eritrea, the Ethiopian highlands and adjacent South Sudan
  • P. b. eremobius ( Hartlaub , 1887) - Southwest South Sudan and Northeast Democratic Republic of the Congo
  • P. b. emini ( Hartlaub , 1882) - English Emin's Weaver - Southeast South Sudan, South Ethiopia and North Uganda
  • P. b. reichowi ( GA Fischer , 1884) - English Reichenow's Weaver - Ethiopia and eastern Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania
  • P. b. stuhlmanni ( Reichenow , 1893) - English Stuhlmann's Weaver - East of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, southwest Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and western Tanzania
  • P. b. sharpii ( Shelley , 1898) - southwestern Tanzania and adjacent northeastern Zambia
  • P. b. nyikae ( Benson , 1938) - Nyika Plateau in Zambia and Malawi

The singing of the male is described as chattering with interspersed musical tones, also as repeated "wink-wink".

Way of life

The diet consists mainly of insects , fruits, seeds and nectar . Fledglings are fed spiders , larvae , beetles , crickets , fishing rods , etc.

The breeding season is between August and November in Cameroon and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, between March and June in Kivu and between July and November in Sudan.

The species is monogamous and breeds singly. The clutch consists of 1 to 3 eggs.

Hazardous situation

The stock is not considered to be at risk ( least concern ). endangered ( Vulnerable ).
