The Augsburg Hirblinger Street station located in the district Bärenkeller in the northwest of Augsburg and was opened on December 1, 1940 the traffic between the then young district, the city center and the suburbs. It was in operation until the early 1990s as a stop for regional trains to Dinkelscherben , Markt Wald , Ulm and Welden . Due to traffic-related considerations (the platforms were too narrow for ICE high-speed trains to pass by ) it was closed for passenger traffic and is currently only used as a waiting and overtaking point for regional and long-distance trains .

construction

The station is designed as a through station and has four tracks and two central platforms . The two middle tracks (between the platforms) come from track 6 or lead to track 7 of the Augsburg-Oberhausen station (so-called freight railway), to the west you used to reach Dinkelscherben, Markt Wald, Welden and Ulm. The switch that led to the Weldenbahn has been expanded and the line to Welden has been closed and almost completely dismantled. Only regional and freight trains run on these two middle tracks.

The two outer tracks come from track 1 and lead to track 2 of the Augsburg-Oberhausen train station. To the west one used to reach Dinkelscherben, Markt Wald and Ulm. Both regional and long-distance traffic run on these two outer tracks.

Station building

The former waiting room and counter were converted into a pub along with the former kiosk, which also uses the former station toilets. What is unusual here is that you have to leave the restaurant to go to the toilet, as the toilets are located in a different building.

In September 2013, the railway real estate subsidiary Aurelis confirmed the planned sale of the building. According to the Augsburg city planning council, the sale of the property would not stand in the way of reactivation, since according to a feasibility study, access could also take place via a staircase from the overpass.

In October 2013, the city of Augsburg announced the purchase of the approx. 800 m² property including the station building in order to prevent a sale to a private investor.

future

The station's platforms and tracks remained intact even after the station was shut down. This fact has recently become important again, as the station is to be reopened as a passenger train stop in the course of the establishment of the Augsburg S-Bahn . This would primarily require renovation work on the platforms, the construction of modern access stairs and the installation of lighting and signage.
