The Grünhaus-Mertesdorf station is a former station on the Ruwertalbahn in the Ruwertal in the local community of Mertesdorf in the Rhineland-Palatinate community of Ruwer in the Trier-Saarburg district .

history

The station was opened together with the Hochwaldbahn from Trier to Hermeskeil in 1889.

Originally the stop was only called Grünhaus. It was not until Grünhaus became a district of Mertesdorf that the station was renamed Grünhaus-Mertesdorf.

The station building was not built in connection with the opening of the Hochwaldbahn, but after its connection to the Hunsrückquerbahn in 1903. Therefore, the architecture of the building also fits into the construction of the buildings on this route.

In 1998 the station lost its function when the Hochwaldbahn was shut down. Today it is on the Ruwer-Hochwald-Radweg , which runs along the old railway line.

Station building

From an architectural point of view, it is a complex made up of one and two-storey sub-bodies, which is animated by the change in construction. The main building is reinforced with red sandstone on the upper floor, but broken slate stone was used on the ground floor . The roof is a slate thatched hip roof. The building also has a staircase tower with a Welscher hood .

On both sides of the main building, single-storey functional buildings are arranged parallel to the railway embankment and take over the structural elements from the main building in a simplified form. A structural transition to the half-timbered construction of the former goods hall takes place with truss parts.

At that time there was also a signal box in the station, which was mainly responsible for the barrier in the station area.

Until 1975 there was a siding for goods traffic to the Grünhaus manor .

At the beginning of 2020, the former station building will open under the name denk 'mal Bahnhof Grünhaus as a seminar and conference center with an attached bed and breakfast and a pop-up café ( Café California ). The ILOPP Karlsruhe / Trier found its second location in it. We work with methods of logotherapy and existential analysis according to Viktor Frankl as well as from the perspective of practical philosophy .
