The Morbach Station is a train station in Morbach at the hunsrückquerbahn between Hermeskeil and Langenlonsheim .

history

Rail bus in Morbach station

Morbach station was opened on December 15, 1902, with the section between Kirchberg (Hunsrück) and Morbach. From October 1, 1903, the route was extended from here to Hermeskeil. The station was a separate office until May 30, 1976. After the end of passenger traffic in 1976, it was converted to locally operated points.

Between 2009 and 2013, tourist trips with rail buses between Morbach and Büchenbeuren took place under the name SAAR-HUNSRÜCK-EXPRESS . The line in the station has been closed since October 17, 2014.

A reactivation is controversially discussed in connection with Hahn Airport . Brigitte Decker, head of the nearby sawmill, is in favor of commissioning, particularly with regard to possible freight transport.

Architecture and the area surrounding the station

The buildings in Bahnhofstrasse 110, 112, 114 and 116 are a group of three similarly designed apartment buildings from the early 20th century in the vicinity of the train station, which were probably built as apartments for railway employees. These are two-storey plastered buildings, each of which has the ground floor in unplastered quarry stone masonry . The buildings all have a half- hip roof , without any major changes. However, the associated small outbuildings are only partially preserved. The road to the train station is laid out as an avenue . The old station building now belongs to the Decker sawmill, which uses the building as a residence for foreign employees.

The entrance building is similar in architectural style to most of the other entrance buildings along the route, but it is almost twice as large. The first extensions took place in 1919. At that time, goods handling was expanded by a few meters. Further modifications were made after the Second World War .

On the ground floor there was a large ticket office with office space and a spacious waiting room. However, the waiting room only existed until 1956 when it was converted into a BASA room. In the 1960s the premises were renovated and rebuilt. After the track system was expanded in the 1930s, a standard signal box was set up in the station. There was also a Moo signal box . There all points were set remotely. The guard signal box was dismantled as early as 1952. The lever bench with full signage from Morbach is now in the signal box museum at the Lampertsmühle-Otterbach train station near Kaiserslautern .

By 1976, the station was always with a dispatcher , who as from 1953 train conductor occupied was in charge of all the way to Büchenbeuren, and a traffic officer. Until 1974 the station had an office manager . In addition, a goods floor worker was responsible for the goods customers. In 45 years of train control operations in the Hunsrück, there were no incidents, although the train control route was even extended to Simmern in 1963 .

After the cessation of passenger traffic on May 30, 1976, ticket issuance was reduced. Nevertheless, the platform edges were renewed in 1976 and only completed after the closure. In July 1977 the electrical barrier booms were replaced by mechanical ones, so that train personnel now had to close the barriers. The switches were also all mechanized again. In 1983 and 1986, further significant dismantling measures were carried out, during which the sawmill connection in the station was dismantled and a new connection was installed in the main line to Hoxel . In 1986 the loading line was also rebuilt.

In the station there was also a branch of the railway depot , which was opposite the station, but is no longer preserved today. These included a coal platform , a small workshop, an official residence, a 16-meter-wide turntable and a three-tier engine shed . The engine shed had two shed tracks with a smoke outlet in the direction of Hermeskeil and a smoke outlet in the direction of Simmern. At times a shunting locomotive of the series Kö II was stationed in the station. The system was mainly used for overnight stays and for the restoration of locomotives from the two railway depots in Simmern and Hermeskeil and as a staff base.

After the Second World War, one of the 93 series machines stayed overnight in Morbach to bring the early train to Simmern, as the viaducts in the direction of Hermeskeil were blown up. After the through traffic was reopened, this overnight stay was omitted, so that the facility was now used by daily freight trains. At the end of the 1960s and 1970s, the engine shed and the buildings were demolished and the turntable dismantled. The foundations were then filled in and a sawmill built over it.
