BW The Schillingen station was the station of the municipality of Schillingen in Rhineland-Palatinate . It was located in the district of the hamlet of Niederkell near Waldweiler . The Bilstein factory, which is still in operation today, is located near the former train station .

history

The station was built in 1889 on the Ruwertalbahn between Trier and Hermeskeil . Until 1907, however, the station consisted only of a through track with a platform, next to which a loading track was built on the left and right. In 1908, however, crossing tracks were built in the station so that train crossings were now possible. In the period that followed, ramps and sidings were also built for the Bilsteinwerk. During this expansion, the level crossing had to be relocated. The resulting curve in the road has been preserved to this day.

After the cessation of passenger traffic in 1981, only goods traffic took place in the station. As a rule, freight traffic only came from the direction of Hermeskeil, as the section between Schillingen station and Zerf station was no longer used as planned. In addition to the freight trains, military trains also ran through the station.

On May 25, 2017, the "Cycle Path Festival" took place in Schillingen station.

Station building and station area

The construction of the station building differed from the buildings in Zerf, Pluwig and Kell . However, in Schweppenhausen there is a station building similar to this type of construction. This can be justified by the fact that the building was only built later.

The building was probably no longer in operational use before 1980. At the time, however, a concrete switchgear building was built, as traffic was switched to train control in the 1960s and 1970s . From the 1990s the station was reduced to one track. After the closure in 1998, this track was also removed as part of the conversion of the railway line into the Ruwertal cycle path .

From the 1960s, the barrier at the train station was operated with a light signal. However, it was replaced by a mechanical barrier in 2000 at the latest, which has since been dismantled.

There is a chapel in the vicinity of the train station. It was built in 1928 by Matthias Raul, who lived in the immediate vicinity of the train station. Three statues have been placed inside the chapel: Heart of Jesus, Saint Joseph and Saint Wendalinus.

On the Bahnhofstrasse between Waldweiler and Schillingen, which runs past the station area, there is a supermarket , a more than 140 year old restaurant and a Taiwanese tea shop in the local area of Schillingen .
