The station Zwönitz was an operating point of the railway line Chemnitz-Adorf and the branching lines Zwönitz-Chemnitz Süd and Zwönitz-Scheibenberg in the area of the city Zwönitz in Saxony . Today the former regional railway junction is only a stop with a junction .

history

As early as the end of the 1850s there were several petitions for a railway construction in the Zwönitz area, which, for example, called for the Lugau coal railway to be continued . After years of disputes - in the meantime it looked like that Zwönitz should not have any rail connection at all - in 1872 the Chemnitz-Aue-Adorfer Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft received the approval to build the Chemnitz-Aue-Adorf and the Zwönitz-Stollberg-Lugau and Zwota- Klingenthal. On July 15, 1873, the official start of construction for the “main line” in Zwönitz, and the preparatory work on the branch line to Lugau had also started in the same year. Due to the founders' crash , the construction of the branch line was suspended for the time being in 1874 and completely abandoned in 1876. The Chemnitz – Aue section, including the Zwönitz station, was opened on November 15, 1875. However, the inauguration was overshadowed by a storm that covered, among other things, a roof in the train station.

Zwönitz station around 1910

From the beginning, the station was equipped as a water station, which had to be expanded just a year after the opening of operations. In 1877 a second platform - an intermediate platform - was added. In the decades that followed, the station was continuously expanded, including in 1883 with the construction and extension of tracks.

The construction work for the line to Stollberg (later extended to Chemnitz Süd) began in 1887 with the extension of the reception building. In addition to track extensions, a locomotive shed and a 13 m turntable were built . The line to Stollberg was opened on July 14, 1889, making Zwönitz a local railway junction. With the opening of the track, the turnouts were converted to signal-independent operation. However, the increase in traffic was greater than expected, so the goods shed was only enlarged one year after it opened.

In 1896, the preparatory work for the Zwönitz – Scheibenberg railway began . The southern section of the station was built during the construction of the line, making Zwönitz an island station . Furthermore, the crossing structure of the Zwönitz – Stollberger line was built over the Chemnitz – Adorf railway line, in order to tie the trains from Stollberg straight through without crossing to Scheibenberg. The new line was opened on April 30, 1900. This also made the engine shed superfluous, as from then on hardly any trains ended up in Zwönitz, which is why the building was soon demolished.

After the Second World War, which the station survived undamaged, the lines to Stollberg and Scheibenberg (the latter between Zwönitz and Elterlein) were dismantled in 1947 as a reparation payment. Two years later, however, the connection to Stollberg was rebuilt in three months at the request of the Wismut. However, after the Bismut rush hour had left the street, traffic remained low. Thus in 1967 all traffic on the route was stopped.

At the 100th anniversary of the Chemnitz – Aue line on September 21 and 22, 1975, Zwönitz station formed the center of the celebrations with a motor vehicle exhibition. In addition to a brochure, a report was also created for the current camera .

However, the traffic in the now through station remained considerable. For operational reasons, the amplifier trains to and from Chemnitz began and ended in the mid-1960s instead of at the Thalheim station in the Zwönitz station. Only with the economic changes caused by the fall of 1989/90 did traffic almost completely break down. In 1990 the general cargo traffic was stopped, in 1991 the station was dissolved as an independent service point and placed under the Aue (Sachs) station . Freight traffic was still formally carried out until May 30, 1994, but this had practically no longer existed since 1991.

The station was completely renovated in 2003/04 together with the Chemnitz – Aue line. Since then, the station has only been a stopping point. A new platform was built about 300 meters north of the old station close to the level crossing on Bahnhofstrasse. The connecting line to the Vattenfall substation was retained, however, and the two remaining tracks on the south-east side of the station were assigned to it.

Passenger traffic was carried out by the Erzgebirgsbahn until September 2018 , which stopped at the stop every two hours. The connection point to the substation also still exists, but is only very rarely used.

outlook

With stage 2 of the Chemnitz model , the stopping point is to be expanded again to become a crossing station. The re-establishment of the crossing facility enables the planned introduction of the hourly service between the train stations Thalheim (Erzgeb) and Aue (Sachs) . The start of the main construction work for stage 2 of the Chemnitz model is planned for 2019, the traffic commissioning for 2020.
