The Železný Brod – Tanvald railway is a regional railway connection in the Czech Republic , which was originally built and operated by the kk priv. South-North German Connection Railway (SNDVB). It begins in Železný Brod ( Eisenbrod ) and leads through the Kamenice valley to Tanvald ( Tannwald ) at the foot of the Jizera Mountains .

According to a decree of the Czech government, the line has been classified as a regional railway ("regionální dráha") since December 20, 1995.

history

On March 31, 1872, the south-north German connecting railway was granted the concession to build a wing railway to Tannwald, which should branch off the main line Pardubitz – Reichenberg in Eisenbrod. The main line was opened on July 1, 1875, and secondary operations were introduced on October 10, 1879 .

After the nationalization of the SNDV, the line was transferred to the kk Österreichische Staatsbahnen kkStB on January 1, 1908 . After the First World War, the newly founded Czechoslovak State Railways ČSD took their place .

After the Sudetenland became part of Germany in autumn 1938, the line between Plaw and Tannwald-Schumburg came to the Deutsche Reichsbahn , Reichsbahndirektion Dresden . The Plaw (Plavy) stop was designated as the border station. In the Reich curriculum , the connection was now included as KBS 160r Tannwald-Schumburg-Groß Hammer-Eisenbrod. After the Second World War, the entire line came back to the ČSD. From now on only the Czech station names were valid.

On January 1, 1993, the line was transferred to the newly founded České dráhy (ČD) in the course of the dissolution of Czechoslovakia .

In 2000, the Czech side presented a study which envisages the long-term inclusion of the route in the Regiotram Nisa project . An electrification of the route and the use of light rail vehicles , which can also be transferred to the tram tracks in Liberec, are planned. However, implementation is not expected in the near future, as the Czech Ministry of Transport does not consider the project to be a priority.

Today the route is served by an express train connection Praha-Vršovice-Tanvald that runs four times a day. Local trains run every two hours on the Železný Brod – Tanvald route. The trains to and from Liberec have not been linked since 1997. (Status: 01/2008)

Vehicle use

The express trains from Praha to Tanvald are now mainly carried by the modernized railcars of the ČD class 854 . Some of the express trains also run locomotive- hauled with the 749 series (“Bardotka”). The tried and tested class 810 railcars were used in local traffic . The modernized version of the series 814 runs together with the ČD series 840 today.

The 743 series diesel locomotives, which were once procured for the steep routes to Kořenov, dominate freight transport .
