Velké Hamry (German Großhammer , formerly Groß Hammer ) is a city in the Czech Republic . It is located eleven kilometers east of Jablonec nad Nisou in the Jizera Mountains and belongs to the Okres Jablonec nad Nisou .

geography

The city is located in the south-east of the Jizera Mountains in the Kamenice Valley . In the west and northwest extends the Schwarzbrunnkamm, on which the Pustina (831 m) and the Muchov (787 m) are the highest peaks near Velké Hamry.

The European route 65 / State route 10 between Tanvald and Železný Brod runs through Velké Hamry .

Neighboring towns are Tanvald in the north, Český Šumburk in the northeast, Bohdalovice in the east, Zlatá Olešnice and Haratice in the southeast, Michovka and Plavy in the south, Zásada in the southwest, Zbytky and Hamrska in the west and Smržovka in the northwest.

history

The first iron hammers in the Kamnitz valley and on the south-eastern slope of the Schwarzbrunnkamm were probably made in the 13th and 14th centuries, but there are no written records from this time. The water power of the Kamnitz drove several grinding mills, the stone mills.

In 1844 the Liebiegsche textile factory was founded in Swarow and one of the most important textile companies of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy and later Czechoslovakia emerged . More factories were set up on the river. The construction of the road from Tannwald to Eisenbrod in the years 1864 to 1867 and the railway built between 1870 and 1875 ensured the necessary transport links for the companies. In 1870 a textile workers' strike broke out in Swarow and was bloodily suppressed. In 1907 a spinning mill was established in Mezivodí, and two brickworks were also operated.

In 1910, Ober and Unter Hammer had a total of 4,226 inhabitants, most of whom belonged to the Czech ethnic group. In 1914 the municipalities of Ober Hammer and Unter Hammer were merged to form the municipality of Hammer, which in 1926 was elevated to the status of a market town of Groß Hammer. On April 1, 1937, Groß Hammer, which had previously been parish to Držkov , received its own parish. After the Munich Agreement , Groß Hammer was incorporated into the German district of Gablonz on November 24, 1938 . As a result, the Czechs were evacuated. In 1942 the town of Großhammer (Jizera Mountains) was formed from the market towns of Groß Hammer and Haratitz, the municipality of Plaw and the district of Swarow of the dissolved town of Schumburg an der Desse . After the Second World War this was lifted again; a large part of the German-speaking population was expelled . 1947 Bohdalovice and Svárov were incorporated. Velké Hamry has been a city since 1968.
