Držkov (German Drschke ) is a municipality in the Okres Jablonec nad Nisou and belongs to the Liberec region . It is part of the Železnobrodsko microregion .

geography

It is located on the Železný Brod – Tanvald railway , about 10 km north of Železný Brod. Držkov lies on a plateau surrounded by hills. Its highest, Černá studnice (Schwarzbrunn) , is 869 m high. At the end of the village the terrain drops steeply to the valley of the Kamenice (Kamnitz) , a right tributary of the Jizera (Iser) .

history

The origin of the name of the village, which used to be written as Dryzkow, Drzkow, Držkow, Zdržkow, Trschkow or Drschkow , cannot be proven. Presumably it originated from the family name Držislav . The place was already inhabited in the 10th century, mainly by pagan Slavs of the Chorwaten tribe . From archaeological studies of graves it can be concluded that around 60 people lived here at that time. The first written mention comes from 1352 (construction of the wooden church of the Cyriak order ). The place was built above the Návarov Castle in the time of the Lords of Železnice. According to the gentlemen, it should become an important trading center in the region. The first settlers were farmers and probably also miners who extracted iron ore here. Cotton weaving mills, brickworks, limestone and granite block quarries were later operated.

After a checkered history during the 15th century, Držkov came to the rule of Navarov (Nawarow) , later to Wallenstein, Wartenberg, Hasenburg and Smiřický . After the Battle of White Mountain in 1620, Držkov came to the rule of Albrecht von Wallenstein and then passed to the widow of General Lamotte.

In 1669, the owner of the estate, Marie Angela von Nunkl, had the Church of St. Bartholomew ( Sv. Bartoloměje in Czech ) built. She built a castle right next to it from stones from the demolished Navarov Castle. The descendants of the Lamotte, members of the Ehrenberger family, retained the Navarov rule until the 19th century. Eventually, Dr. jur. Vaníček the castle and the property belonging to it. Today the castle is owned by his descendants. At the end of the 19th century the community had 115 houses and around 1000 residents.

After the First World War, the residents returned to the glass industry. Nine grinding shops worked in the village. During the occupation, Antonín Lejsek introduced the production of cut glass and synthetic glass. Držkov was a border municipality in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. The neighboring town of Plavy (Plaw) already belonged to the Greater German Empire. This made Držkov a place of refuge for expelled Czechs from the German area. Shortly after the Second World War, these refugees returned home. At the same time, some longtime residents of Držkov moved away.

Držkov was known for his music bands, so-called harmonies. They were associations of musicians who played mainly in Poland , Lithuania and Ukraine . They were called “Bohemici” and were mainly employed by the nobility and circus companies. The chapels were staffed to varying degrees, mainly by men. Mainly violins , clarinets , double bass and trumpets were used; the repertoire consisted of mazurkas , polkas and waltzes . The place was next to Zásada the largest and most important place in the former district Železný Brod (Eisenbrod) .

Most of the place consists of single-family houses. Due to its location, it is a popular starting point for tourist activities.
