Návarov Castle

The Návarov Castle is a ruin of a rock castle about seven kilometers northeast of Železný Brod in the Czech Republic . It rises above the confluence of the Zlatník brook with the Kamenice and was the seat of a lordship that reached deep into the Jizera Mountains . The castle itself consisted of a castle palace in the west and other buildings in the south.

The castle was probably built in the 14th century. The castle name was first mentioned in 1365 in connection with Heřman z Heřmanic. The first recorded owner of the castle is Heinrich von Waldstein (Jindřich z Valdštejna) . In 1397 it was owned by the royal court marshal Johann Čuch von Zásada . His son Peter suffered great economic damage in his lands during the Hussite Wars and lost the castle. With the help of King George of Podebrady he later got the castle back. Because of her high debt, Čuch's daughter gave a large part of the property and the castle back to the king.

George of Podebrady had no interest in the castle and sold it in 1452 to Nikolaus Zajíc von Hasenburg (Mikuláš Zajíc z Házmburga). A politically influential and important noble family at that time became the owner of the castle. The next owners were from 1474 Aleš Šanovec from Šanov and from 1489 the lords of Tannfeld. They sold the Návarov castle to Hans von Oelsnitz in 1492 .

In 1502 the castle belonged to Johann the Elder of Schumburg (Jan starší ze Šumburka), then in 1505 to Alexander von Laisnek (Alexandr z Laisneku), in 1508 to Johann and Bernhard von Waldstein and in 1511 to Johann von Boskowitz .

In 1515, Zikmund Smiřický von Smiřice bought the estate and expanded the castle. It remained in his family until the confiscation in 1622. After that it was transferred to Albrecht von Waldstein . He incorporated Návarov into his Duchy of Friedland , but gave it as a fief to Peter Antonius de Lamotte and von Frintrop in 1627.

During the Thirty Years War , the castle was captured by the Swedes in 1643 and recaptured by the imperial army a year later. To avoid further occupations, it was destroyed to the ground in 1644.
