The Děvín (German Dewin ) is a 421  m high mountain in northern Bohemia , on whose summit ridge the extensive ruins of the Děvín castle can be found. Since 1996 the mountain in its entirety has been under state protection as a natural monument Děvín, Ostrý and Schachtstein .

Location and surroundings

The Děvín is located four kilometers east of the town of Stráž pod Ralskem ( Wartenberg ). Immediately at the foot is the small community Hamr na Jezeře ( Hammer am See ) with the Hammer Lake . To the south is the small rock castle Stohánek ( Struhanken ), which served as a bailey for Děvín.

The Děvín consists of very soft ashlar sandstones from the chalk , while the summit ridge of the mountain is formed by basalt . The basalt columns lying there are striking. The iron ores in the contact area between the basalt and the sandstone were the subject of little extensive mining. The Děvín is located in the Ralsko Geopark .

Castle history

The castle complex on the Devin was built in the 13th century and was initially a royal castle . In the 14th century, the complex came into the possession of the Lords of Wartenberg . Of these, the castle was extensively rebuilt, including a bastion on the neighboring Hamerský Špičák ( Hammer Spitzberg ). Another renovation in the Renaissance style took place in the 16th century . At the beginning of the 17th century the castle was abandoned and fell into disrepair.

Several tunnel entrances testify to mining attempts from later times.

Very little of the extensive castle complex has survived today. Parts of the castle wall, the palace and the keep have remained .

From the so-called riding school , your gaze wanders north and east towards the Lusatian Mountains and the Jeschkenkamm . A view of the nearby Hamerský Špičak ( Hammer Spitzberg ) is possible from the westernmost peak rock .

Routes to the summit

• On the mountain, a branch of the leads today red marked cone path . The ascent from Hamr ( Hammer ) takes about 1/2 hour.
