The Sychrov Castle (German Sichrow ) is located in Sychrov , eight kilometers northwest of the town of Turnov in Okres Liberec , Czech Republic . It is an imposing testimony to a historicist castle building in Northern Bohemia .

history

Up until the first quarter of the 19th century, the property was a small two-story country palace, built in 1690 in the Baroque style . At that time it was owned by the Lamotte von Frintropp knights.

In 1820 Prince Karl Alain Rohan acquired it from a Comtesse de la Motte and had the house expanded and enlarged over a period of fifteen years. Sychrov received a bel étage , two towers and Biedermeier salons, built by local and French architects. 1820 bought the noble Rohan also an associated basic rule (Fideikommißherrschaft in Swinjan and Lomnitz) by the Lords of Waldstein . Soon afterwards, Prince Charles Alain Gabriel de Rohan had the former baroque building added one floor and additional buildings added.

From 1847 to 1862 there were significant changes under Camil Josef I. Rohan in the years when the castle was completely redesigned after a fire and received today's neo-Gothic appearance in the style of a large English country estate. The architects Bernhard Grueber and his successor Josef Provot provided the designs . There are more than forty lavishly furnished halls and rooms in the castle. The Rohan family gathered a very extensive stock of furniture in the castle.

The portraits are mostly portraits of family members, French nobles and kings. This gallery once had 230 images. It was the ancestral gallery of the Rohan, who fled France in 1789 and, by a lucky coincidence, were able to take the pictures with them when they fled France. An Antonín Dvořák Museum has been set up in some of the rooms . The composer wrote a symphony at the castle.

In 1866, Sychrov was at the center of European history. In July, in the days of the Battle of Königgrätz , Kaiser Wilhelm I and Prince Bismarck visited the castle. In November, Emperor Franz Joseph stayed on Sychrov to visit the battlefields of 1866.

The last owner of the estate was Alain Fürst Rohan until the end of the Second World War in May 1945.

The palace is a tourist attraction and it is often used as a location in films, including the American feature film, The Beautician and the Beast (The Beautician and the Beast) .

A music festival is held there every year in honor of the composer Dvořák.
