Hrubý Rohozec Castle

The Hrubý Rohozec Castle (German Castle Großrohosetz ) is located in Hrubý Rohozec, a district of Turnov in Okres Semily in the Liberecký kraj region in the Czech Republic . It is located on a steeply sloping rock on the bank of the Jizera ( Jizera ), three kilometers north of Turnov.

history

The original castle was built around 1300 by a branch of the Markwartinger . It served to secure a trade route that passed below the castle. After 1483, under the rulers of Kraigk von Kraigk and von Wartenberg , it was the seat of a lordship which included Turnau and the surrounding villages. From 1513 to 1516 it was rebuilt into a late Gothic castle. At that time it housed a congregation of the Bohemian Brothers . Since Adam von Wartenberg was involved in the Bohemian Estates uprising of 1547, he was expropriated and the castle and estate were assigned to the Bohemian Chamber . In 1555 the property was bought back by the Wartenbergers. After the battle of the White Mountain , Johann Georg von Wartenberg lost the rule of Großrohosetz, which had meanwhile been reduced by dividing the inheritance and selling it, through imperial confiscation. In 1623 the castle and lordship were acquired by Albrecht von Waldstein , who gave it as a fief to his colonel Nikolaus von Desfours . After Wallenstein's death in 1634, he received the castle and rule of Rohosetz as his own property. At the same time he was raised to the rank of count. The castle was rebuilt in 1675 under the Count Desfour. Another renovation by the master builder Johann Philipp Joendl took place after 1822 in the neo-Gothic style.

The castle was owned by Carl Graf Desfours-Walderode until 1945, the end of World War II. It survived the war years without damage and is now a national cultural monument . It is managed by the National Monuments Office and is open to the public.

Literary processing

Rainer Maria Rilke , who stayed several times at Rohosetz Castle, processed his impressions there in the novella Teufelsspuk and to some extent in the novel The Notes of Malte Laurids Brigge .
