Chudý Hrádek Castle

The ruins of the Chudý Hrádek Castle (German Chudyhradek ) are located six kilometers northwest of Dubá in the Daubian Switzerland .

It was built on sandstone cliffs at the confluence of two streams in the Gründel Valley ( Dolské údolí ) between Holany and Dřevčice . The Dolský Mlýn ( Gründelmühle ) restaurant used to be located below the castle .

history

The first mention of the castle Hradek is from 1391, when Henry the Elder Berka of Duba on Houska distributed his property to his sons. He gave his youngest son Heinrich Vaněk Hrádek and Houska, Milčany and Frýdlant fell. In 1402 Vaněk took over the property after his father's death and made Hrádek his seat. He brought his two sons Heinrich and Johann to the castle with their tutors, Father Nikolaus from Prague.

Around 1519 Georg Ostersky Kaplirz zu Sulewicz became the owner of the castle, he sold it in 1532 to Wenzel von Wartenberg auf Rübenau, who united it with the rule of Neuschloß .

When Johann Georg von Wartenberg was expropriated as an insurgent in 1622, Chuhyhradek was still mentioned in the list of his confiscated property, but the castle was probably already uninhabited at the time. After that, the walls fell into disrepair and the ruins were later only called Pustý zámek (Desert Castle) or Poustka . The hamlet of Poustka ( Pauska ) located in the headwaters of the Dolský potok (Gründelbach) also received this name.

In 1709 the Gründelmühle was built in the valley under the ruins on the site of an older mill. Several clear sources such as the Devil's Fountain (Čertova studánka), the Tanneborn (Jedlová studánka) and the Schinderbrunnen (Rasova studánka) flow from the sandstone massif on the Teufelsgrund into the Gründelbach, whose water is considered drinkable here.

Of the castle, which is only accessible from the south, on a cliff, surrounded by the remains of the moat, the walls of the main building up to four meters high and the partially buried fountain have been preserved on the 150 m long castle grounds. On the north side facing the meadow there are two castle cellars carved into the sandstone.
