The Blumenberg – Eilsleben railway is a 25.3-kilometer, single-track railway line in Saxony-Anhalt . Because of its former main load, it has also been known as the sugar railway since the 1990s .

history

The concession for the route Blumenberg - Eilsleben was granted by the Prussian state parliament on February 25, 1881. To supply the sugar factories during the beet campaign , the first sections of the route were opened for freight traffic ahead of time: on October 5, 1882, the Blumenberg – Klein Wanzleben section and ten days later, on October 15, the Eilsleben – Seehausen section . The following year, on September 1, 1883, the entire line was put into operation and passenger services were introduced. The majority of the importance of the railway lay in freight transport. Above all agricultural products were transported, especially sugar beets in autumn. But passenger traffic was also brisk at times. In 1944, six pairs of trains ran on weekdays and three on Sundays. In 1989 it was similar: six pairs of trains on weekdays and four on Sundays. There were also individual trains on sections of the route. In the end, however, a class 771 rail bus without a sidecar was sufficient .

On September 28, 2002, passenger traffic on the entire route and goods traffic on the Eilsleben – Klein Wanzleben section were suspended. This was shut down on December 31, 2003 and, with the exception of the level crossings, dismantled in 2007. Following a public tender for the route by Deutsche Bahn , it was taken over by the Deutsche Regionalisenbahn (DRE) in 2005 . When a subsidiary of Nordzucker AG built a new bioethanol plant in Klein Wanzleben at the end of 2007 , the state of Saxony-Anhalt supported the expansion of the Blumenberg – Klein Wanzleben section (especially the increase in axle loads to 22.5 tonnes) as well as the construction of the loading station and the Sidings on the site of the sugar factory with one million euros. Since August 29, 2008, the infrastructure has again been in the position of a public railway and around 100,000 tons of bioethanol are transported annually in tank cars from Klein-Wanzleben to the Magdeburg harbor. At the beginning of 2011, the number of 1,000-ton block trains was increased to two per week. Although one train replaces 50 road tanker transports, there are safety concerns among residents at the level crossings that are not barred.
