Cevennes Railway to Nîmes

The Florac – Sainte-Cécile-d'Andorge railway is a former narrow-gauge railway in the eastern Cevennes in south-eastern France . It was operated by the Compagnie de chemins de fer départementaux , CFD.

Construction of the line began in 1904 and was inaugurated on July 24, 1909. Starting from the Sainte-Cécile-d'Andorge station, where there was a connection to the Cevennes Railway , the line ran north-west, mostly on the northern slope of the Gardon d ' valley . Alès , then in the valley of the Miments.

The operation was complex, several large slope viaducts had to be built and the speeds were low due to the gradients and tight curve radii. In the opening year, a train took 2.5 hours to cover the 49 km route. Mainly wood, barite and agricultural products were transported in freight traffic .

Operations ceased on March 31, 1968. The track bed and the viaducts have been preserved, there were discussions about the construction of a bicycle path. Several former CFD vehicles are in use on various museum railways in France.
