Railway line Köpingebro – Gärsnäs to Köpingebro

The Gärsnäs – Sankt Olof railway was a Swedish railway in what was then the province of Kristianstads län . It led from Gärsnäs to Sankt Olof , had a length of 14 kilometers and was built by Järnvägsaktiebolaget Gärsnäs – S: t Olof (GStOJ) in standard gauge . Today the route is a no longer used museum train .

history

In the early 1880s, Gärds Härads Järnväg was built from Karpalund on the Kristianstad – Hässleholms Järnväg to Degeberga . At the end of the 1890s, Östra Skånes Järnvägar built a continuation to Brosarp and Ystad – Brösarps Järnväg planned and built a railway line from Tomelilla to Brösarp .

Järnvägsaktiebolaget Gärsnäs – S: t Olof

The railway company Järnvägsaktiebolaget Gärsnäs – S: t Olof (GStOJ) was founded in Ystad on February 27, 1899 and shares were subscribed for 190,200 crowns . The company took over a concession which the members of the Ystad City Council had received on September 9, 1898.

The captain of Väg- och vattenbyggnadskåren C. Schmidt was commissioned to draw up a cost estimate. Some changes were decided, including the use of stronger rails weighing 25 kg per meter . The route was moved in 1899 from a length of 12.4 km west of Gyllebosjön to a new route 13.9 km in length on the east side of Gyllebosjön. With these and other changes, the cost proposal was 410,730 crowns including freight wagons.

C. Schmidt was appointed site manager, the construction work began in January 1900. The construction of the line was completed in 1901, but remained until June 22, 1902 after a dispute over the connection in Gärsnäs to the Simrishamn – Tomelilla Järnväg and the final inspections of the line not opened in December 1902. Two train stations were built along the route as well as a turntable in Sankt Olof. The total cost of construction was 615,000 crowns.

vehicles

The railway company bought ten freight cars that were available when the traffic began. Locomotives, passenger cars and personnel provided Ystad – Eslövs Järnvägsaktiebolag (YEJ) on the basis of a transport contract .

Sale to Ystad – Gärsnäs järnvägsaktiebolag

The company had financial problems from the start and the owners wanted to sell it. The buyer was Ystad-Gärsnäs järnvägsaktiebolag , based in Ystad , which Järnvägsaktiebolaget Gärsnäs-S: t Olof took over on September 1, 1905 for 300,000 crowns. The merged railway lines Köpingebro – Gärsnäs and Gärsnäs – Sankt Olof were called Ystad – Gärsnäs – S: t Olofs Järnväg in Swedish , while the company name Ystad – Gärsnäs Järnvägsaktiebolag (YGJ) remained.

Ystad – S: t Olofs Järnvägsaktiebolag

The city of Ystad, which owned a large part of the shares, was the sole owner from February 1, 1929. At that time, the company's name was changed to Ystad – S: t Olofs Järnvägsaktiebolag (YGStOJ). During the entire time, the railway line was part of the Trafikförbundet Ystads Järnvägar consortium .

nationalization

In the course of the general nationalization of the railway , the city of Ystad sold the company to the Swedish government, on July 1, 1941 Statens Järnvägar took over the operation.

Shutdown

Passenger traffic on the route ended on January 1, 1972, goods traffic on February 1, 1972. Freight traffic had only been carried out when required since 1962. The line was not dismantled because the Skånska Järnvägar Museum Association had rented it from the state railway from 1971.

Further transfers of operations

On July 1, 1994, the Simrishamn municipality bought the route. In 2002 Skånska Järnvägar AB acquired the line from the municipal border in the north to the station area in Sankt Olaf. In 2006, the Association for Road Construction Measures sold a short stretch of the former Östra Skånes Järnvägar north of the Brösarp station near Maglehems ora from the municipal boundary between Kristianstad and Simrishamn and parts of the station areas in Sankt Olof and Vitaby. Parts of the station area in Östra Vemmerlöv and Stiby as well as Gärsnäs were excluded from the sale. In return, he acquired parts of the Gärsnäs – Sankt Olof line from the municipal property of Simrishamn.

Current condition

Skånska Järnvägar has owned the track since 2006, when it was bought by Simrishamn Municipality.

After two derailments in 2008, museum operations on the entire route ended.
