Ystad – Eslöv railway to Ystad

The Tomelilla – Brösarp railway was a 30-kilometer Swedish standard-gauge railway from Tomelilla on the Ystad – Eslöv to Brösarp on the Degeberga – Brösarp railway on the Östra Skånes Järnvägar in Skåne . It was built by the private railway company Järnvägsaktiebolaget Ystad – Brösarp .

history

In the early 1870s, when the Ystad – Eslöv railway was built, the possibility of building a railway from Äsperöd station on this line to Everöd via Degeberga was examined . A meeting was held in Brösarp on February 27, 1874. As this route could not be financed, the investigations were stopped.

Instead, Gärds Härads Järnväg was built from Karpalund on the Kristianstad – Hässleholm railway to Degeberga in the early 1880s . Östra Skånes Järnvägar , which Gärds Härads Järnväg bought in the late 1890s, planned and built a line from Degeberga to Brösarp that opened in 1900.

Järnvägsaktiebolaget Ystad – Brösarp

The city council of Ystad planned in 1897 a connection to Brösarp through Ystad – Eslövs Järnvägsaktiebolaget . The concession for the route between Tomelilla and Brösarp was granted on September 9, 1898. But then Järnvägsaktiebolaget Ystad-Brösarp (YBJ) was founded on February 27, 1899 and shares were issued for 652,100 kroner . Ystad subscribes for 300,000 crowns, the surrounding rural communities 99,000 crowns and Ystad – Eslövs Järnvägsaktiebolag 200,000 crowns.

Bank director J. Tengberg was elected chairman of the company's board of directors; the board also included bailiffs C. Holmgren, consul A. Lindgren, mayor B. Petersson, pharmacist S. Smith and wholesaler J. Andrén from Ystad, district governor A. Hagander, Kiviks Äsperöd and the farmers J. Simonsson, Hedeberga and A. Hansson, Ravlunda. The social order was adopted on May 5, 1899.

The construction costs were estimated by the master of the road and hydraulic engineering office ( Swedish Väg- och Vattenbyggnadsbyrån ), C. Schmidt at 1.1 million crowns. The construction of the line began in July 1899 and was carried out independently by the company, including two bridges, three underpasses and five stations. C. Schmidt was chosen as the general contractor for the construction of the railway. The track was built with steel rails weighing 30 kg per meter .

Östra Skånes Järnvägar expanded the station in Brösarp with two sidings. The line was opened to traffic on September 19, 1901, with the final construction cost calculated at 1.7 million crowns.

vehicles

The railway company bought 45 freight cars that were available when the traffic began. Locomotives, passenger cars and personnel provided Ystad – Eslövs järnvägsaktiebolag (YEJ) on the basis of a transport contract .

nationalization

YBJ was a member of Trafikförbundet Ystads Järnvägar from the start . The economic situation was initially poor and only improved in 1912. The company's management proposed a sale to Ystad – Eslövs Järnvägsaktiebolag . However, this was not decided by the Ystad City Council. As part of the general nationalization of the railways , on July 1, 1941, all railway companies that were part of the Trafikförbundet Ystads Järnvägar consortium were nationalized and Statens Järnvägar took over operations.

Shutdown

With the takeover by SJ, passenger traffic between Tomelilla and Sankt Olof was discontinued on July 1, 1941, resumed on September 18, 1944 and discontinued again on June 9, 1947. Passenger traffic between Sankt Olof and Brösarp ended on January 1, 1972.

The freight between Tomelilla and Sankt Olof ended on 1 June 1954 with the track 1954-1956 was mined between Sankt Olof to a kilometer from Tomelilla. The leftover piece was retained as an industrial connection. Freight traffic between Vitaby and Sankt Olof ended on April 1, 1974 and the last section between Vitaby and Brösarp was discontinued on June 1, 1975.

Current condition

The museum railway company Skånska Järnvägar bought the disused railway line from the municipal boundary of Kristianstad north of Brösarp to Sankt Olof from the Swedish government for 850,000 crowns and has been running museum trains on the route since 1971. The embankment between Tomelilla and Spjutberg has been turned into arable land, from there it can still be largely seen as far as Sankt Olof.
